چکیده

In 10 Nigerian patients undergoing upper abdominal surgery the plasma cortisol concentration was slightly decreased after premedication with pethidine and atropine, and during anaesthesia without surgery. There was a small increase during surgery. None of these changes was statistically significant. There was a significant increase in the postoperative period however. Premedication caused a slight increase in blood sugar which remained steady during anaesthesia. There was a significant increase after 30 and 60 rnin of surgery, with a peak value at 60 min after operation. There were no significant changes in the mean values of plasma insulin concentration throughout the period of study.

The influence of anaesthesia and surgery on plasma cortisol, insulin and free fatty acids.

The plasma cortisol level of patients anaesthetized for 1 hour with thiopentone and nitrous oxide was found to remain unchanged. During body surface surgery it rose slightly, and during intra-abdominal surgery it rose to more thap double the resting value. The blood sugar under the same circumstances changed in a qualitatively similar manner and the free fatty acids appeared to fall during anae...

Effects of two differing halothane concentrations on the metabolic and endocrine responses to surgery.

The effects of two differing concentrations of halothane, 2.1 MAC or 1.2 MAC, on the metabolic and endocrine responses to abdominal hysterectomy were investigated. The changes in blood glucose and lactate values, and plasma glycerol, cortisol, insulin and catecholamine concentrations were similar in both groups. We conclude that high concentrations of halothane do not suppress the responses to ...

Effects of the extradural administration of morphine or bupivacaine, on the metabolic response to upper abdominal surgery.

The influence of thoracic extradural local anaesthetics (0.5% bupivacaine) or extradural morphine on the metabolic response to upper abdominal surgery was compared with the administration of morphine i.v. in the period after operation. The extradural local anaesthetic group had significantly lower blood glucose and plasma FFA concentrations and consistently, but not significantly, lower blood g...

جراحی در بیماران دیابتی

There are more than 140 million people with diabetes in the world. Iran’s share is estimated at 1.5 million people. The increasing prevalence of diabetes and the longer life expectancy of diabetic patients mean that an increasing number of patients with diabetes are undergoing surgery, and not just for diabetes and its complications, such as end-stage renal disease, retinopathy, peripheral vas...

Introduction: The stress response caused by surgery makes sending messages from the site of injury or surgery to the central nervous system and the hypothalamus and pituitary and in turn to the liver and adrenal medulla. In response; release of adrenocorticotropic hormone, growth hormone, vasopressin and the subsequent release of cortisol and insulin release inhibition occurs which leading to i...
